Bash Tips for Efficient Terminal Usage

When working on a remote server, we spend most of our time interacting with a terminal. here are some tips that make life easier:

  • TAB. Everyone should know this by now, but it is good to remind it anyway: the TAB key can be used to complete words and command. It is invaluable to save keystrokes and typos. When pressed twice in short sequence, it will give you a list of possible completion alternatives.
  • CTRL+W. Remove the word behind the cursor.
  • CTRL+U. Erase everything from cursor to beginning of the line.
  • !!. Repeat the last command.
  • CTRL+D. Is a shortcut for logout.
  • CTL+Z. Stop the current process. At the prompt you can then type bg to put the process in the background. Use fg to bring the process back into the foreground.

Do you have usage tips that you want to share with the other CCMST users? Please send them to Massimo (massimo.malagoli@chemistry.gatech.edu) for inclusion in the Tip of the Week section.
